Yorkshire Icons "Hall of Fame" launched

A Yorkshire Icons 'Hall of Fame', celebrating the individual excellence and inspiration, was launched at a gala dinner last night (Thursday 7 February) at the Head Office of Yorkshire Bank in Leeds.  Recognising the significant contribution to their chosen fields, seven people were inaugurated into the Hall.

 

The first Yorkshire Icons - Hall of Fame inductees were announced as:

  • Undisputed champion of the chat show, Sir Michael Parkinson
  • The greatest English fast bowler of all time, Freddie Trueman
  • One of the greatest actresses of the post-war period, Dame Judi Dench
  • Leading English abolitionist, William Wilberforce
  • Supermarket supremo, Sir Ken Morrison
  • Renowned landscape watercolourists, Ashley Jackson
  • Prodigious fund-raiser for cancer charities, Jane Tomlinson

The Hall of Fame was also launched at www.yorkshire-icons.com, which gives the people of Yorkshire an opportunity to nominate their own inspirational Icons, for what will become an annual event.

 

Glenn King, Director of Yorkshire Bank, said: "This evening recognises and celebrates the very best of Yorkshire grown talent from the worlds of politics, business, sport and entertainment.  With some 150 years successful growth in Yorkshire, we greatly value our talented people which made this such an fantastic event to be involved with. I look forward to seeing who the public nominates for future entrants to the 'Hall of Fame'."

 

Keith Madeley, Chairman of Yorkshire Society, said:  "It is important that we recognise the breadth and depth of talent that Yorkshire has produced over the years.  Today's talent will provide an inspiration for the talent of tomorrow."

 

Televised by Calendar, the event was attended by over 120 of the great and the good of Yorkshire.  The event was hosted by Yorkshire Bank, Yorkshire Post, the Yorkshire Society, Marketing Leeds and ITV Yorkshire.
